Collaboration not Competition: Industry Collaboration in a Competitive Environment

Throughout our industry, whether that is from a development or a test perspective, we govern ourselves with models, processes and frameworks. However, when it comes to implementing these tools, we tend to forget their global nature and continue to look only inwards to our own organizations.

Testing, and in particular, Test Management is a business that is, by its very nature, competitive. Many of us work as individual contractors, consultants for large test organizations or directly for the clients themselves as Test Managers, Test Analysts et al. Yet for all that, we all follow (or claim to follow) a common set of testing models, principles, ideas and increasingly, qualifications. Why then, when it really matters, are we so reluctant to exchange ideas, information and strategies in the name of ‘confidentiality’. Perhaps the best way to utilize these tools is to stop looking within and start to collaborate with each other.

Recently, a major cross industry project demonstrated that even though we come from such diverse industry backgrounds, we are capable of collaboration and ideas exchange and can successfully deliver a high profile programme without breaking the cardinal rules of confidentiality.

This document looks at how a collaborative approach to cross industry projects provides greater benefits than a competitive one.
